Cap-sizes are the head-scope (in centimeters) on height of the ears.
The following table shows an approximate old-age-overview.

Size:

34/36 - newborns until to the 6. life-week

38/40 - 6 weeks up to 3 months

42/44 - 3 months until 6 months

46/48 - 6 to 9 months (children with big heads))
                     6 to 12 months (children with small heads))

50/52 - been suitable for most children between 10 months and 4 years.

54/56 - 2 until about. 8 years (children with big heads))
                     5 years until the adulthood (girls)
